Red Envelopes :) February 11, 2008

pict0139.jpgFor millions of youngsters, the highlight of celebrating Lunar New Year comes when their parents give them a red envelope, or hong bao. The color red symbolizes good fortune, and the Chinese characters adorning the envelope wish the children such things as prosperity,good luck and health.

Good wishes aside, the kids really get excited about the money that’s stuffed inside. Young people remain eligible to receive red envelopes until they begin working or get married, at which point they become red envelope givers.(studio clasroom)

123.jpgThe book, High Life Low Life, which is written by Alan Battersby  is our winter vacation’s homework.

The story is about Nat Marley, a private investigator, experience the strange story of two old ladies from the opposite ends of New York society-the high life and the low life.

We have to finished reading it and prepare for the test on the school opens!

Chinese Ice Sculptures Melting January 29, 2008

untitled.jpgThe festival, in Harbin in the far northeast of China, has become the city’s biggest individual source of income since it was launched in 1985. 

Harbin is one of China’s coldest cities. In winter, temperatures can drop as low as -35C, but last year, Harbin’s average temperature was 6.6C, the highest on record.

The ice sculptures are starting to melt much earlier than usual.

Sun Lei, an official involved in the festival, told the BBC that the festival traditionally can only run until the end of February.

Compulsory cooking classes January 28, 2008

 English teenagers are to receive compulsory cooking lessons in schools. The idea is to encourage healthy eating to combat the country’s spiralling obesity rate. It’s feared that basic cooking and food preparation skills are being lost as parents turn to pre-prepared convenience foods. Jon Devitt reports
